At first glance, the starkness and vulgar of the words chosen had kinda scared me and made me blush(a lil). But Mr Sas encouraged us to read it none the less ( and made 2 poor boys read it out * lol * for good fun) , and the surprising thing is that once you have gotten past the vulgarity of the words used, you'd realise that actually, this poem means alot to us( the female population). All of a sudden, the poem wasn't about sex anymore, it was about male oppression. The topic wasn't about sexuality but about male pornography and the use of females as mere sex objects. And Althea's first reaction to it (" Mr Sas, why is the poet so horny?") cannot be further from the truth.
Wallach is actually an israel femenist, and a pretty good one at that. Mr Sas told us his reason for picking the poem was because the poet actually accomplished her motive of telling people about the shocking plight of women using phallocentric terms. The more i begin to understand it, the more i'm drawn to the poem.
I think taking literature this year was the smartest thing i've done:) I truly love the subject! I love that there is no fixed answer. I love that there are so many types of poems. I love the thought put into choosing each word carefully. I love that each line conveys so much more than what it states.
I kinda think that this year is going well for me:) the clouds have cleared and now i'm super motivated to STUDY for my promos! Lit and Econs included=))
Aja Aja! Fighting!
